"Time amongst the Xavante~their music and environment" - Talk illustrated with projected images and recordings.
Emily Burridge talks about her developing association with the Xavante tribal group in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, which commenced in 1992 and led to the implementation of a solar powered health centre and medicinal gardens which was inaugurated in 1998.
When Emily visits the Xavante she is guest in the Chief's family dwelling. This is a traditional Xavante house made of a type of palm. She has to wash in the river and cook her food. She enters into Xavante daily life. Her personal experiences of staying with the Xavante over the years has provided an extrodinary insight into the Xavante culture. An insight independent of anthropological research.
Central to Xavante culture is the tradition of singing. Emily has been invited to record both individuals and groups singing and has created a libarary of their songs. She has also made recordings of the natural environment.
When Emily gives the talk it is accompanied by recordings of the Xavante traditional songs and chants and recordings of their natural environment and together with illustrative projected images of individuals and daily life in a Xavante village it is an educational and entertaining event.
